“Child’s Play” Exhibit

Arts and Crafts / Children's Event


    Child’s Play is a lighthearted group exhibit focused on objects and materials that are iconic to childhood and playtime that features the work of four local artists: Don Greeson, Jean Greeson, Janet Hickey, and Janet Orselli that is on display at the Gallery at Flat Rock. Each artist’s focus is somewhat different, including clay, mixed media, and assemblage sculptures, and paintings. Click here for more information.

      Guided Walk in Historic Oakdale Cemetery

      Great Outdoors / Historic Site / Local Charm


        Join a guided tour of Historic Oakdale Cemetery, Hendersonville’s municipal cemetery which whispers stories of the town’s early days. The famous Italian marble monument which inspired the title of Thomas Wolfe’s novel Look Homeward, Angel is in Oakdale, along with both marked and unmarked graves of historic figures. The heritage of the local African-American community is told in the Black section of the cemetery, while the designated Jewish cemetery reveals how the town grew to embrace ethnic and religious groups through the years. How and why the cemetery was created, names of those who helped build the town and where they were laid to rest, where the Sunshine Lady is buried, and more questions will be answered.             Moonshining in the Mountains – The Center’s newest documentary film focuses on the iconic moonshiners. Rather than the stereotypes of lazy, drunken mountaineers, moonshiners were some of the most entrepreneurial and creative farmers in a community who not only provided a public service but helped to put food on the table for themselves and their communities. The stories are both heart-rending, funny and moving and open a window into the soul of the Southern Appalachian world that’s rapidly vanishing.
